The Full House
ELECTROLUX
This counter-depth 23-cubic-foot fridge-freezer with French doors has two humidity-controlled crispers, two icemakers, and freezer baskets that pull way out—for the room and organization parents crave and the convenience their little ones demand (a kid-height drawer for snacks, so handy). Special slide-out glass shelves keep spills contained. And an alarm lets you know if a door has been open for more than five minutes. $3,549, at Home Depot
The Techie Freak
SAMSUNG
With a built-in Wi-Fi–enabled eight-inch LCD screen and useful apps, this 28-cubic-foot four-door refrigerator is the best thing since sliced bread. Want an alarm to sound as your milk’s expiration date approaches? No problem. A notes app can keep track of what you have and what you need to add to your grocery list; an Epicurious app helps to brainstorm recipes. Check the calendar for appointments, read news headlines, and get the weather report—all on your fridge. $3,499, at Best Buy
The Nostalgist
BIG CHILL
This 1950s-style fridge has all the modern amenities: an icemaker, an Energy Star rating, plenty of space (20.9 cubic feet), crisper drawers, glass shelves, and a self-defrost mechanism. If you’re not prepared to go full-on Leave It to Beaver, consider the Retropolitan—“where retro meets modern,” boasts the company—which has squared-off edges and a freezer drawer on the bottom. Available in 180 custom colors (shown here in Jadeite Green). $2,995, at bigchill.com
The Gourmet
SUB-ZERO
The Pro 48 is Sub-Zero’s largest non-commercial fridge-freezer combo: more than 18 cubic feet of space on the glass refrigerator shelves and 11 cubic feet on the stainless steel freezer shelves. There are two refrigerator drawers with individually controllable temperatures, so your filet can be a bit colder than your feta. Despite its powers, this superhero consumes less energy, minute to minute, than a 100-watt light bulb. $15,540, at Sub-Zero/Wolf, LuxeHome
The Minimalist
JENN-AIR
This 24-inch double-drawer refrigerator is perfect for keep-it-simple types with tiny kitchens, fitting as it does into standard cabinetry. The 2.4-cubic-foot top drawer and 2.7-cubic-foot bottom drawer glide out on heavy-duty ball bearings and provide plenty of space to chill wine, produce, and meat. Automatic LED lights illuminate your eats when the drawers are open, and electronic controls with temperature displays help you keep your food at ideal temps. $2,399, at Abt
Not Too Deep
Counter-depth refrigerators are designed to sit flush with standard cabinets for a sleek look and a less obstructed, more workable kitchen. Comparable in price to other fridges, they are typically taller, wider, and shallower (usually 25 to 27 inches deep instead of the traditional 30 to 32 inches). Because, ultimately, they have fewer cubic feet of space inside, they may not be the best option if you’re constantly entertaining or feeding a large family. But if you like the look of a refrigerator that doesn’t protrude or in any way resemble an elephant in the room, go for it. Bosch, Electrolux, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid are among the companies that offer them.
