Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Jesse Menendez, who hosts several shows for Chicago Public Media: “The Music Vox,” “Live From Studio 10” and “Vocalo on WBEZ.” Menendez is also the program organizer of the day-long hip hop and arts festival Winter Block Party this Saturday, 1/26, at the Metro.

“Friday I’ll probably go to Flat Top Grill after work. I like the Asian stirfry with chicken and I try to pile on as many things as I can. After, I’ll head to this pretty cool show at Schubas. The electronic duo, Eight Bit Tiger, open for this London group, Palma Violets, who have this punk, clash sound to them.

“Since Saturday is going to be such a long day, I’m going to start off at the Hollywood Grill on Ashland and North. I usually get the New York strip steak and eggs with hash browns. My mom used to take me there when I was younger so going there reminds me of being there with her. After I’ll be at the Metro for Winter Block Party which kicks off at noon. I’m really excited to see breakdance battles at 12:15. I used to breakdance so it’s fun to see how far the art has developed. Later, Sidewalk Chalk is headlining the show that starts at 8. And of course I’ll end my night at the after party at Smart Bar where there will be some great DJs.

“Sunday I’ll need to relax. I’m going to take my little munchkin to the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen. But before we get there, we’ll have to stop at Nuevo Leon. We’ll go there for a brunch. Their carne asada is pretty fantastic. Plus I love that it’s been there since 1962. We’ll end the day at home taking the time to unwind.” —As told to Elly Fishman
