Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Jeneene Brown-Mosley, program director of the Chicago Blues Festival, which runs Friday June 7 through Sunday June 9.

“This weekend, I’ll be at the Chicago Blues Festival making sure everything runs smoothly. The theme for the festival this year is ‘rolling up the river.’ We’ll go from New Orleans and Mississippi to Memphis to Chicago over the weekend.

“Thursday evening, I’ll be in Millennium Park at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion for an evening blues concert with our next generation of blues artists including Fernando Jones, Blues Kids of America, Shemekia Copeland, and her special guest Quinn Sullivan.

“Friday, I would definitely not miss Kevin Purcell and the Nightburners at 4:15 and Mississippi Heat at 2:30. I’ll also have lunch at some point; I love the mustard-fried catfish from one of our vendors, BJ’s Market and Bakery. It’s delicious.

“On Saturday, I would recommend Bobby ‘Slim’ James. He is a blues artist that is well recognized here in the city of Chicago. At 11:30, close friends of Pinetop Perkins will be part of a panel discussion about his legacy. It would have been his 100th birthday this year. He was part of the Mississippi Delta scene.

“Sunday, we’re going to be celebrating Delmark Records’ 60th birthday from 11:15 to 5:30. Miss Nellie ‘Tiger’ Travis will be performing—she’s one of our blues divas and she is a dynamo. We’ll end with a combination of our old school and new school performers including Demetria Taylor and James Cotton.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
