Most neighborhoods have their share of serviceable albeit highly skippable bars—think greasy pub grub and the usual beer, wine, and cocktail suspects. But Humboldt Park’s Bullhead Cantina defies the formula. In fact, it’s worth a trip to the under-the-radar hood just for a taco and a stiff drink.
Tacos ($3 each) make up the bulk of the menu at this cash-only joint. Hefty corn tortillas house both traditional and slightly off-kilter fillings: Al pastor delivers the perfect mix of tender spiced pork and chunks of juicy grilled pineapple; grits and kale get a sugary twang from harissa and bourbon-pineapple reduction; and smoky chipotle sauce adds depth to Southern fried chicken with melty Monterey Jack. Whichever taco you choose, wash it down with a shot of whiskey and a PBR tall boy—all for $6.
You may want to come here even when you want only a drink. Bullhead is that rare bar with a $5 craft cocktail special on Friday nights. The Balcones Bumble hits hard with blue corn whiskey but ends sweet and slow with warm honey and lemon. Familiar, with an edge—just like Bullhead.
