Openings

Open now: It seems like every week, there’s a new restaurant opening in Hyde Park. This week it’s a second location of the pig-friendly West Loop spot Porkchop (1516 E. Harper Ct., 773-493-9333).

Open now: The renovation of the Silversmith Hotel (10 S. Wabash Ave., Loop, 312-372-7696) is complete, and with it comes a new restaurant, the upscale Adamus Lounge. The menu encompasses craft cocktails, cheese and charcuterie, and small plates like mussels and sliders.

Open now: More fried chicken, this time in Lake View. The Roost, Carolina Kitchen (1467 W. Irving Park Rd., 312-405-8482) is frying for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day—it’s a brick-and-mortar offshoot of the Roost food truck.

Thursday, April 3: Though it’s soft-open now, the official opening day for the long-awaited Harding Tavern (2732 N. Milwaukee Ave., Logan Square, 872-802-0182) is Thursday. The bar, from the owners of the nearby Café Con Leche, focuses on craft beers and gourmet pub grub.

Friday, April 4: Toast to Wrigley Field’s 100th anniversary at the start of the Cubs’ first home stand with a hearty meal of fries topped with gravy and cheese curds at the Big Cheese Poutinerie (3401 N. Clark St., Wrigleyville, 312-561-0380.) It’s the first American location for the Canadian chain.

Congratulations to Next chef Dave Beran, who yesterday was named one of Food & Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs. The announcement came in the form of a selfie on Instagram  with magazine editor Dana Cowin. He joins a group of 11 other young guns from across the country—the full list is here.

To pay homage to the 32-year tenure of Yoshi’s Café (3257 N. Halsted St., Lake View, 773-248-6160), today the City Council will designate the corner of Halsted and Aldine as Yoshi Katsumura Way in honor of the restaurant’s longtime proprietor in a ceremony beginning at 5:45 p.m.

April just screams sandwiches, doesn’t it? It must, because it’s apparently National Grilled Cheese Month. You can honor this with a three-sandwich flight at Bar Pastoral (2947 N. Broadway, Lake View, 773-472-4781), where $12 will get you tasting portions of a traditional version with Widmer’s one-year cheddar served with tomato tapenade, a version made with the mild Portugese cheese Castelinhos and served alongside a charred scallion-pepper jelly, and a Maxx Extra grilled cheese with chocolate ganache to finish things on a sweet note. The flight is available all month long.
