Beckwith’s promotion in 2018 marked a much-buzzed-about sea change at the museum, with overlooked artists, many of them people of color, assuming pride of place. More recently, Beckwith has made waves by challenging the traditional museum exhibit format: In Duro Olowu: Seeing Chicago, Beckwith handed the curatorial keys to the Nigerian-born British designer, who drew from artworks in the MCA’s own collection for the show.
