Picture the sound of skates gliding across the hardwood floors, thumping James Brown music, colorful flashing disco lights, and skaters effortlessly rolling and dancing their way around the rink. On Sunday nights, the Rink, opened in 1974, hosts a “JB skating session,” an old-school skate party for adults that starts late at night and goes until 1:30 a.m., music from the Godfather of Soul playing all the while. JB-style skating isn’t just about the music: It’s an approach, co-invented in Chicago in the early ’70s, that involves dizzying moves like the “gangster walk” and “crazy legs.” (One of the Rink’s current instructors, Calvin Small, was a JB-style pioneer.) And on Sunday nights, practitioners turn the Rink into a dance floor — grooves and complex smooth moves guaranteed. 1122 E. 87th St., Chatham
