Forget the crowded Lakefront Trail, with tourists on Divvys and speeding cyclists yelling, “On your left!” On Northerly Island, you can take a leisurely ride through the quiet beauty of Chicago’s old natural landscape while admiring a stunning view of the city skyline. Yes, it’s unfinished and has a complicated history, but the park is a one-of-a-kind crossroad of the city’s natural and urban beauty. The rolling path traverses through re-created native prairie, filled with radiant, colorful wildflowers. You’ll see monarchs and other butterflies, migratory birds, and, if you’re lucky, a heron in the center lagoon. Come at sunrise or after sunset, and chances are you’ll be the only biker in the park. (Bonus: Northerly Island offers access to the secluded south end of the 12th Street Beach.) It’s so quiet that it’s easy to forget you’re in the heart of the city — until you look north and see skyscrapers on the near horizon. 1521 S. Linn White Dr., Near South Side
