A tumbler and plate from Marimekko

Crate & Barrel and Marimekko, the classic Finnish textile company, are old friends. The Oak Brook–based housewares institution has been stocking Marimekko’s vibrant graphic prints since its original store opened in the 1960s. Now the brands are closer than ever: In May, Marimekko set up a shop-within-a-shop in Crate & Barrel’s Lincoln Park location—one of four recent openings, including outposts in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Dozens of new styles have been added to the roster of Marimekko bedding, bath items, and home décor already available through Crate & Barrel, including Socks Rolled Down—a collection of pitchers ($89), tumblers (at left; $35 for a set of two), and other glassware in playful shapes and candy colors (the line’s name is a nod to a Finnish expression for being comfortable in one’s own skin). Ceramic tableware for everyday use will come in a mix-and-match variety of colors and designs. Bolts of fabrics will be on hand ($60–$80 per yard), and customers will have the option to special-order Crate & Barrel furniture in bold Marimekko prints. The shop will carry a small range of accessories as well, such as aprons ($39) and totes ($80) adorned with Marimekko’s signature red and pink poppies.

Marimekko will launch its own e-commerce site this summer; a flagship store in Manhattan is slated to open this fall. The company also plans to step up its in-store collaborations with Crate & Barrel: 22 new Marimekko Shops are in the works for stores across the United States. “Marimekko’s joyful designs are just as relevant and fresh today as they were when we first introduced them [in our first store] more than 40 years ago,” says Barbara Turf, Crate & Barrel’s president and CEO.
