Just outside South Haven, Michigan, in jolly contrast to the more traditionally styled vacation homes in the area, is an unusual enclave of small, Deco Moderne houses. Part of the Sleepy Hollow resort community, the distinctive condo-cottages were designed by architects at Lucien Lagrange, a Chicago firm better known for its work on downtown high-rises and the Park Hyatt Hotel.

The individually owned cottages were built in the style of the small houses that had been on the site since the late 1930s, their flat roofs, mullioned windows, curving walls, and nautical feel evoking the look and spirit of the 1933-34 Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. The new designs bring the aesthetic into the 21st century with durable modern materials and contemporary luxuries such as air conditioning and up-to-the-minute kitchens. Now that’s progress.
