Certain shops require revisiting, and Michael Del Piero Good Design is one of them. A recent remodel—as well as new inventory from South America, Europe, and Africa—makes this a perfect time. Del Piero is known for her soothing blend of clean-lined furniture, antiques, modern art, and ethnic artifacts. Among the new goods: a long, bleached white oak table from France, sculptural paper lighting by local artist Andrew Stansell, and hand-stitched upholstery textiles by local fashion designer Agnieszka Kulon. 1914 N. Chicago interior designer Sean Cowan was so thrilled by the success of his Tastemaker Sale on OneKingsLane.com last year, he and partner Eric Silverstrim started an online furniture business called Vern + Vera (named after their chihuahuas). Their 1960s and ’70s furniture and accessories have a sexy-cool vibe that will make you want to sip a Manhattan as you browse. Time to Update
Inspired by the recent remodel of their River Forest home, Peter and Barbara Bernick opened Update Interiors this past spring in Oak Park. “I’m drawn to unique items that instantly freshen up a space,” Barbara says. It shows: The 1,500-square-foot shop is filled with statement pieces (seatbelt chairs by Phillips Collection, giant planters by Chicago’s Gold Leaf Designs), and luxury gift items (Lafco candles, snakeskin picture frames). Wares range in style from whimsical to refined, and the price pendulum swings more high than low.
