There’s a particular pleasure in seeing one’s food choices before ordering instead of merely reading about them on a menu. At City Provisions Delicatessen, that pleasure is intense. The locally sourced meats, baked goods, wines, and prepared dishes are as lovely as they are tasty. Assemble a picnic to eat at the communal table or at a counter along the window; staffers will heat up anything that needs it. Popular items from the deli case have included Sriracha egg salad ($9.50 per pound), a smoked ham and Gruyère sandwich with apple-onion jam ($9.25), and an impressive slab of butternut squash polenta ($9.95 per pound). On recent visits we also loved our custardy slice of quiche ($4.25), tasty little fennel-raisin dinner rolls ($3.50 for six), and two forms of bread pudding: one savory (ham and apple, $3.95), the other sweet (chocolate and strawberry, $4.25). We were delighted by both cupcakes we sampled ($2.50 each): a chocolate with fluffy salted caramel icing and a moist pear-ginger. We plan to picnic all winter. 1818 W. Wilson Ave.; 773-293-2489.
