Olympic cred:The resident club of this Northbrook Park District facility has sent at least one racer to the games every year since 1952. In February, members Lana Gehring, Brian Hansen, and Mitch Whitmore made the trip to Pyeongchang.

For everyday athletes:Anyone who’s at least steady on skates can join ($1,150 for the six-month season) and might end up training alongside — or perhaps a little behind — a current or former Olympian. If you’ve never laced up in your life, there’s even a Learn to Skate class ($335 for nonresidents).

Norge Ski Club

Olympic cred:This was the first year Norge athletes made the U.S. team, and there were three of them: Mike Glasder, Casey Larson, and Kevin Bickner.

For everyday athletes:For more than 100 years, the collection of manmade jumps at this club tucked next to the Fox River has allowed Midwestern flatlanders to sail through the air as if they were in the mountains. Beginners can learn the fundamentals on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and sometimes Saturdays on the five increasingly challenging ramps ($50 for a trial run).

Olympic cred:The Blackhawks’ new training rink is, of course, home to silver medalist Patrick Kane. And this fall, the arena hosted a camp for the U.S. women’s team, some of whom won gold in South Korea.

For everyday athletes:Newbies can sign up for beginner or intermediate hockey classes ($112). Already comfortable handling a stick? Gather a bunch of your friends (or make new ones — rink employees can help you connect with a team that matches your skill level if you’re solo) to compete in the winter leagues, which run January 3 to May 16 ($4,800 per team).

Olympic cred:Addison native Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim, who paired for a bronze this year, spent last summer here perfecting their signature quad twist.

For everyday athletes:This facility offers year-round lessons, both group (from $190 for nonresidents) and private. Families can take to the ice together during public skating hours on Sundays from 1 to 2 p.m. ($3 for kids and $5 for adults; skate rental is $3).
