Although he ultimately lost to Rahm, the Mexican American politician’s remarkable showing in the first round of voting put the incumbent back on his heels, despite García’s being outspent 12 to 1, and issued a wake-up call to the administration that the city’s growing Latino community didn’t just punch its weight, but had the potential to become, in the words of a headline in our magazine, “Chicago’s New Nexus of Political Power.”
