When food writers want to describe something as modern, we fall back on some variation of "It's not your father's steak house/grandmother's diner/uncle's BBQ shack." Autre Monde, a bustling Med-flavored café from a pair of Spiaggia vets, is plenty modern–but any member of your family would feel comfortable there. (So, for that matter, would your rabbi, your ophthalmologist, and your ex-boyfriend.) Enormous shareable plates, such as a majestic braised and smoked lamb shank on a king-size bed of polenta, give way to housemade pastas, including thick packets of goat cheese tortelacci with black truffle and brown butter. And where else in Berwyn can you chase a perfect hazelnut pot de crème with a Serbian prokupac in a breezy backyard patio abutting a functional greenhouse?
