If you’re a Big Ten football fan and a Comcast subscriber, chances are you’ve been spending a lot of time this season watching the games in bars. Comcast’s channel 255, reserved for the recently launched Big Ten Network, has been dead air, owing to the stalled negotiations between the channel and the cable provider about the terms of service. (BTN wants to be on extended basic cable; Comcast wants it on a sports package that costs extra.)
Who’s suffering from the blackout? According to the network, Big Ten alumni in the six-county Chicago area number more than 325,500—about the population of Cincinnati. By these figures, the University of Illinois and Northwestern have the most fans in the dark—mercifully, perhaps, since those teams might be too painful to watch.
