The Five

Don’t-miss picks for Wednesday, May 13 through May 19, 2015

1 Charles Ray: Sculpture, 1997–2014

Art: A major retrospective by this well-loved sculptor fills the Modern Wing’s contemporary galleries. Known for his subtly disturbing scenes produced with high finish and detail, Ray is like the anti-Koons.
5/15–10/4. $17–$23. Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan. artic.edu

2 Chicago Underground Film Festival

Film: Watch a top crop of documentaries as well as avant-garde films at this fest—now in its 22nd year.
5/13–5/17. $9–$75. The Logan Theatre, 2646 N. Milwaukee. cuff.org

3 Hedwig Dances

Dance: For 30 years, the modern dance troupe founded by Jan Bartoszek has regaled the city with signature pieces. It celebrates its anniversary with a repertoire of Bartoszek’s most popular works, as well as a world premiere: Bangweulu.
5/15–5/16. $17–$42. Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport. hedwigdances.com

4 Glocca Morra

Rock: It was a sad day for a small sect of fans when these Philly indie-punks announced their breakup last November. As promised, the band hits the road one last time—with pals Greys and the Valenteens—for seven farewell shows.
5/16 at 5:30. $10. Beat Kitchen, 2100 W. Belmont. ticketfly.com

5 Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Classical: Salonen, Degout, and Sir Willard White all take the stage again for the centerpiece of the festival, a concert production of Debussy’s only opera, Pelléas et Mélisande. Debussy’s untethered, impressionistic music washes over the listener in immersive waves.
5/14. 5/16 and 5/19 at 7. Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan. cso.org

What I’m Doing This Weekend

Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: actor Penelope Walker. The Project(s) runs through Sunday, June 21.

“Friday, I’ll probably take a walk around the lake and then I’ll grab something at Growling Rabbit. They have the best quiche—the crust is really flaky and buttery and usually there’s a veggie option. They also have a really good quinoa salad. They are probably my go-to every morning. Then I’ll do the show at 8; usually I’m pooped after that.

“Saturday, in between shows, I’ll probably do a workout at Fit Body Boot Camp. They take it to the next level and it’s really motivating. Sometimes after the show, we go over to Mrs. Murphy and Sons Irish Bistro for drinks. It’s a bar and a restaurant; it seems to have something for everyone. It’s really big, but it feels very neighborhood-y.

“Sunday, I’ll probably go to A Taste of Heaven in Andersonville. They have really good pancakes and their coconut cream cake is fantastic.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
