Academy Awards: Best Picture Oscar Winners from Nelson Carvajal on Vimeo.

Because aside from fish fraud, elk heads, and the upcoming sequester, the Oscars are all anyone is talking about, here is a supercut of a clip from every Best Picture winner ever.

If you’re wondering where it came from, you don’t have to look far. Nelson Carvajal, a Chicago-based video editor, had some free time in between projects this past Tuesday and started thinking about the upcoming telecast (ABC, Sunday, 6 p.m. CT). “I hadn’t seen a video that had compelled me about the Oscars [this year],” he told us last night. “Then I saw the poster this year, and I liked what they did, with each [statue] being about what the film was.”

He translated the commemorative poster to film, pulling a scene from each Best Picture winner since Wings in 1927-28. “It was a challenge for myself,” he said. “I needed to get back on my project calendar by Wednesday morning, so I had to do it by Tuesday night. It was a marathon, because I had the whole day free. I finished it around 7 p.m. and just put it on my Vimeo page.”

By Wednesday, the video had taken off across Facebook (where we learned about it) and news sites around the country (Hey Slate, Huffington Post, and Esquire).

So what should the next clip be? Carvajal, who’s seen every nominated picture except Amour, has some ideas. “I wouldn’t mind seeing something like Django win, just because it’s so out there. It’s in its own universe. But at the end of the day, it’s going to be something bland like Argo that’s going to win, which is a shame. But what can you do?”
