Chiraq begins filming in Englewood and Wicker Park
Spike Lee and crew were seen filming in Englewood yesterday and will reportedly be in Wicker Park and Bucktown through tonight (in and around Double Door, specifically). Stars-wise, Nick Cannon has been spotted palling around town with Spike. No sign of Common yet, but Terence Blanchard recently confirmed that the rapper is involved.
Riot Fest announces its lineup
The 11th annual punk/metal/emo carnival will feature No Doubt, Modest Mouse, Snoop Dogg, Faith No More, Billy Idol, Motörhead, Rancid, Iggy Pop, and many more. The festival runs September 11–13 in Douglas Park, where it relocated last month after Humboldt Park residents gave it the heave-ho. Rapper Young Pappy slain in Uptown
Local rapper Shaquon Thomas (a.k.a. Young Pappy) was shot to death in the 4800 block of N. Kenmore this weekend, reportedly after posting a video in which he mocks a rival gang. Thomas was previously the target of two shootings in Rogers Park, which left bystanders Will Lewis and Markeyo Carr dead.
Kartemquin's new documentary premieres at the Music Box tonight
Saving Mes Aynak, about an Afghan archaeologist trying to save an artifact-rich dig from Taliban fighters and a Chinese mining corporation, kicks off the Music Box's month-long Tuesday-night documentary series tonight at 7:30. Tickets are $10.
