What I’m Doing This Weekend

Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Jonathan Pitts, the executive producer of the Chicago Improv Festival which starts on Monday, March 31.

“When it’s this close to the festival, I like to do something different from improv. [So] Friday night, I’m going to see a play by Congo Square Theater called King Hedley II. There’s nothing improvised about it and it’s a deep, dark dramatic show, which is the opposite of everything that we’re about to do next week. After that, I am going to get some ice cream from Margie’s Candies. They give you really large portions and they bring it on these clamshells—it’s like the 1950s. I like to order their chocolate coconut.

“On Saturday, I’m going to get brunch at North Side Bar and Grill. They have a really nice brunch and it’s not that far away from where I live. Saturday night, I’m going to see The Lego Movie.

“Sunday, the international improv performers show up. I have three coming in from Brazil, three from New Zealand, and an improviser coming in from Hawaii—and they are all staying at my apartment. Most of Sunday is going to be showing everybody what’s going on. Sunday night, I’m going to take them to the Chicago Improv League, one of the competitive improv programs we produce.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
