Among the more than 100 new exhibitors at the recent Architectural Digest Design Show was Chicago’s own Jason Lewis Furniture (346 N. Justine St., #308, jasonlewisfurniture.com). “I’m still catching my breath,” says Lewis of his New York debut.

In the six months leading up to the expo, Lewis focused on prototyping pieces including a dining table, bench, lounge chair, and side table. He hoped to create a “balanced collection,” he says. “I have a lot of dining chairs and certain configurations of things in my collection already, so I was trying to branch out a bit.”

Using a technique called steam bending, he placed rectangular pieces of walnut, white oak, and ash wood into a sealed box filled with steam, which allowed him to bend wood by hand and create the T07 side table. “It’s a traditional technique for doing bent pieces and just wasn’t one that I had done a ton of in the past,” he says, “so it was cool to see the wood plasticize.”

Woodworking has been a labor of love for Lewis, who got his start working alongside his father at his workshop and later apprenticed under the late Berthold Schwaiger. Now, Lewis custom builds pieces from his Near West Side studio where, in addition to building this collection, he hopes to create a regular cycle of new designs.

Tomorrow, Bucktown-based gallery Gild Assembly (gildassembly.com) will debut its pop-up shop in Lincoln Park.
