A. Owners of antique daybeds or Euro-sized twin beds can rest easy, and so can nonstandard-size people: mattress solutions abound in and around Chicago. The Verlo Mattress Factory Store, which has several area locations, custom makes mattresses for round beds, cribs, and platform beds, as well as for people tall, wide, or both. Tom Wisniewski, of the Verlo store in Crystal Lake (5150 Northwest Hwy., 815-455-2570), says, "I refer to my mattresses as cars. I’ve got Yugos, Cadillacs, Lamborghinis. We can make any size in any quality." Verlo will come to your house to measure and will consult with you on the quality of mattress you want. "Is someone going to be sleeping in the bed every night or is it just for the kids to jump on?" asks Wisniewski. The turnaround time is one to two weeks and the price ranges from $300 to $4,100.

Double Crowne International (6954 N. Glenwood Ave., 773-465-7990) offers the same services for roughly the same prices and has the same turnaround time. "We can make a bed in memory foam, with inner springs, with box support, or Tempur-Pedic," says Joseph Ukonga, vice president. "We can make it extra-thick, too."

For high-end luxury in nonstandard sizes, visit Hästens (430 N. Wells St., 312-527-5337, and 976 Green Bay Rd., Winnetka, 847-441-5337) or Duxiana (984 Green Bay Rd., Winnetka, 847-784-9320). Both are Swedish companies. Hästens beds are made by hand using natural materials (among them, horsehair) and come in European sizes, round, or custom dimensions. The mattresses take eight to 12 weeks for delivery and prices start at $4,000, according to manager Stephen Spaminato. Duxiana mattresses are also made of natural materials, including natural latex. Available in nonstandard sizes and custom dimensions, they come in four different styles, starting at about $2,585 for a twin-size mattress.
