Paul Kahan's restaurants have the magic touch, and that goes beyond the cuisine. Each place has elements I would love to take home: the yellow Tolix chairs at Big Star, the warm-wood banquettes at Avec, the bathrooms at the Publican (not that I have any idea where I would put that awesomely huge communal sink).

As for the cool serenity at Blackbird—that is something that, if it could be bottled and sold, would probably be available through designers at the Mart.

Of course, these projects are all collaborations with design-savvy partners, so not all décor due can go to Kahan. But his home kitchen? That’s a more personal affair. So it was fun to take a peek at Kahan's and his wife Mary Klonowski’s recent rehab of their kitchen, which was on Houzz the other day, posted by local kitchen pro Rebekah Zaveloff (more on her coming soon).

The design is probably best described as a cross between Blackbird and Avec with a little Julia Child mixed in. Kahan went with Seattle-based Henrybuilt for his cabinetry (the company ships fully assembled modular-style pieces that are tailored to clients' specifications). And this cucina has some fun chef-ly touches, such as a wall with sliders holding pots and pans (Kahan compares his display to that of the late, great Julia Child), a great Viking stove, and a supremely organized knife drawer.
