Reaching for the stars: (from left) One Museum Park, Aqua, and Trump Tower

Four of the 20 tallest buildings completed in 2009 were in Chicago—no other city on the globe had as many—and three of those were residential towers. Trump Tower was the tallest worldwide, followed by Jeanne Gang’s award-winning Aqua (number 5) and One Museum Park (number 18). That’s yet another sign of the changes wrought in Chicago by 20 years of rekindled interest in living in the city. “It has created a new kind of urbanity downtown,” says Jan Klerks, the communications manager for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the Chicago-based group that compiled the list. “Isn’t it fantastic?”
