Jenniffer Weigel, 46, may be a spiritual woman, but that doesn’t mean she’s immune to earthly pleasures, like a night at the Billy Goat Tavern or a well-executed Thai massage. The Evanston writer, whose new book is called Psychics, Healers, and Mediums: A Journalist, a Road Trip, and Voices from the Other Side, shares her favorite things.
Favorite local bookstore
City Lit Books in Logan Square.
What I surround myself with at home
Aromatherapy candles. I keep one in every room.
Store I spend the most money at
G Boutique. Anything black lace, I love. Even if a woman is not in a relationship, splurging on lingerie is something she should do for herself.
Wellness addiction
A hand or foot massage does wonders. I go to a Thai massage place, Art of Health, in Evanston.
Favorite Chicago dive bar
The Billy Goat on lower Michigan Avenue. My dad [the late local sportscaster Tim Weigel] took me there as a kid. We’d sit among great Chicago writers and hear their stories
Best meal
At Volare, this good old Italian place, the warm kale salad is so delicious.
Beauty tip
Vitamin E is nature’s way of healing the skin. I carry it in my purse like Purell.
Favorite local attraction
The Chicago History Museum. They have all sorts of relics from the Eastland disaster and Chicago fire.
Words of wisdom
Echo Bodine is an amazing author I interviewed. She said: “Always live by your intuition. It never lies.”
