This is a city filled with great tacos, but La Chaparrita stands above the rest. Is it the grocery store ambience, with papel picado, which make it feel like it’s straight from Mexico City? Is it the squeeze bottles filled with piquant salsas (the orange habanero one, please) and the little plastic bowls of lime wedges and radishes, there to dress your tacos? The tortillas piled high with crispy tripas or tender tongue, or the crunchy tacos de canasta filled with potato and chorizo? It’s all these things, but maybe more than anything it’s that for less than $3, you can experience a moment of joy on a corner in Little Village.
