I usually feel like a smart and confident person — until I walk into Write Club, the monthly melee of minds at Gman Tavern in Wrigleyville. Every third Tuesday, fiery host Corrbette Pasko, delivering her best Tyler Durden shtick, pits writer against writer in onstage verbal combat. In three bouts, competitors get seven minutes to dominate each other with words, reading essays they’ve prepared from prompts (example: cake vs. ice cream). Their treatises set off verbal bombs, leaving the audience dripping in nimble wordplay. At the end of each raucous round, the winner (determined by crowd applause and screams) receives a tiny plastic trophy known as the Loving Cup of Deathless Fucking Glory. Oh, and $100. 3740 N.
