My 2-year-old loves nothing more than watching the L whoosh overhead, so when we’re looking for an easy weekday adventure (and cheap — kids under 7 ride free), we hit the Brown Line’s Rockwell stop in Ravenswood. The tracks run on street level there, so it’s easy to navigate a stroller onto the platform. A perk: With Beans & Bagels a block away, I can first grab a coffee for myself and a bagel for my bread-obsessed daughter. Once we’re on board, the goal is always the same: Ride a few stops for the thrill of exploring a different playlot. We love Cubs-themed Donahue Playground, a quick walk from the Southport stop. If we’re feeling especially ambitious, we head downtown to Maggie Daley Park, getting off at Washington/Wabash, which (critically) has an elevator. Upon heading home, a short stroll from Rockwell is Jacob Playground, with a great hill for log rolls. No matter where we go, we make a game of pointing out beloved buildings, waving to fellow passengers, and watching the city rush past. Just like Ralph Waldo Emerson said, it’s more about the journey than the destination. 4648 N. Rockwell St.
