Dining review from our January 2011 issue
If two’s a coincidence and three’s a trend, then what’s happening on Taylor Street—between Morgan Street and Ashland Avenue—is a movement. Ambitious restaurants keep opening left and right, led by Three Aces, a slick gastropub with the heart of a rock star; Davanti Enoteca, an irresistible Italian spot with cheap wine and big flavors; and One Six One, a global lair with sustainable food. There’s a fast-casual Brazilian BYO (Sabor Express) and promises of a smokehouse (The Original Five BBQ). Heck, even Scafuri—the beloved old family bakery that closed in 2007 after nearly a century on the strip—is returning with a new look this summer. Add it all to the old-guard spots holding court on the street (Tuscany, Chez Joël, Al’s #1 Italian Beef, The Rosebud), and it’s safe to say Little Italy has become the destination we always wanted it to be.
