When Anne Owen moved back to Chicago in 2013 following stints in Miami and New York, she immediately noticed a void in the local food scene. “I wanted to encourage people to consume more plant-based food without being preachy and to make it exciting, sexy, and a true culinary experience,” says the 36-year-old Oak Park native and former publisher of Miami magazine. To accomplish this, she teamed up with chef Jared Van Camp (Nellcôte, Old Town Social) to open Owen + Alchemy, a juice bar in Logan Square. (West Loop and Bucktown locations are coming this year.) Owen’s strong aesthetic imbues the year-old storefront, which serves culinary-focused, plant-based drinks and foods. The Ukrainian Village loft she shares with her puppy, Lorde, showcases the same distinct mix of Old World and modernity. Here are some of her favorite things.
