A pony hair and calf leather bag

Don’t stop by Brunello Cucinelli for a little black dress—or to buy any other black clothing or accessories. Beige, brown, and oatmeal tones rule at this Italian luxury boutique, which is prepped to open this month at 939 North Rush Street.

“Neutrals expose raw beauty,” says founder Bruno Cucinelli, who runs his $260-million-plus-a-year empire from a medieval castle (yes, castle) in Italy. The line, previously carried in Chicago at department stores, built its reputation in the 1980s on cashmere sweaters (which today start at $800). Now the label churns out elegant knit separates, handcrafted shoes, and luxe yet unfussy leather accessories for men and women (such as the pony hair and calf leather bag, $2,550, right).

This summer, Cucinelli tests out tangerine and other trendy hues for select items. And it’s been delving into home accessories, including cashmere pillows ($1,500) and throws ($2,400). You also could pick up a bison-leather iPad case ($770). Just don’t ask if it comes in black.
