Cleetus Friedman’s myriad fans were heartbroken when the chef shut down City Provisions, his uber-local Ravenswood café, in January. “I was sitting in a bar,” he remembers, “and a guy said to me, ‘This has been a tough week. My girlfriend broke up with me, then you closed your shop. I’m not sure which hurts more.’ ”
Mourning turned to elation when Friedman resurfaced down the street as the executive chef at Fountainhead, a beercentric gastropub with the city’s most inviting rooftop bar.
The 86-seat deck has added more wines, ciders, and a shareable punch bowl to its impressive beer roster, and the new retractable awning ensures that inclement evenings won’t spoil the party. Couple that with Friedman’s offerings—which include mussels vindaloo in a tomato and Half Acre beer sauce and former CP favorites such as a smoked turkey and Gouda sandwich—and there’s reason to camp out all summer.
