I’ve been going here for 50 years—I have an office right upstairs. Valois is a fascinating place. You see everybody from panhandlers to the president of the Hyde Park Bank, which is across the street, to Barack Obama, who still comes when he’s in town. As retail strips on the South Side have declined, Valois has been a mainstay for the entire community. I always go for Election Day breakfast. We’re up early—the polls open at 6 o’clock—so we come in here at 8 or 9. But it’s also a place where you can have breakfast all day. That’s a thing I like.
