Loyal watchers of WTTW’s nightly TV news journal have noticed a lot less of longtime host Phil Ponce — who has been scaling back his duties at the station as he nears retirement — and a lot more of Friedman, a three-time regional Emmy winner originally from Mississippi who can be seen most nights hosting alongside Paris Schutz. Carol Marin’s retirement from TV news in November has created the possibility of an even bigger role at the station for Friedman, as has the new Sunday night show she hosts, Chicago Tonight: Black Voices, which has become an especially vital source of insight in the wake of last summer’s social justice protests.
