The purveyors of the luxury French children’s clothing brand Bonpoint searched for a Chicago space for nearly ten years before finding the right storefront on Oak Street. “We knew Chicago was a good fit because it’s a very sophisticated client,” says Tricia Miller, retail director for the line, which is known for its impeccable detailing and classic cuts. The new outpost, inspired by the design of its Parisian stores, was slated to open mid-October.
A favorite among celebrity and royal tots, the haute kids’ clothier embodies European style. “We have our own atelier in Paris and fit models—you don’t see that in children’s wear,” says Miller. “We make sure the armholes are right, the dresses are not too wide or too short, and the fit is just right for that age and size. We take special care in the smocking, the lacing, the finishing, and the fabrics.”
That level of attention translates to investment dressing for the ankle-biting set. Think $150 to $200 for dresses and pants, $450 for coats. Cashmere hats are $110, cashmere scarves are $220, and knit cardigans are $105 and up, depending on size. “Parents know they’re buying something that can be handed down to other children in the family,” Miller says. Clothing is sized from 0 to 12 for boys and 0 to 16 for girls, which includes the Y’en a Marre preteen line from sizes 12 to 16 that mothers in New York, Paris, and Tokyo often wear themselves.
Bonpoint produces three collections per year, including a Christmas line of gorgeous costumes that are usually centered around a theme. This year’s collection is inspired by Alice in Wonderland and debuts in November.
Bonpoint joins the locally owned luxury children’s shop Odile downtown, perhaps proving the adage that regardless of the economy, people always spend money on children and pets. “We’re a children’s brand, but we’re a couture fashion brand as well,” Miller says. “That’s what draws customers to us.”
