Tracy Letts, the Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member who won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for his 2007 drama August: Osage County, has bought a contemporary home in Bucktown that looks nothing like the peak-roofed old house featured in that play.

This past May, Letts and his girlfriend, the actress Nicole Wiesner, moved into the 12-room, 6,873-square-foot house from a two-bedroom rental apartment near Steppenwolf’s Halsted Street home. The couple had told their real-estate agent, Baird & Warner’s Robert Anderson, that they wanted “a house that was modern but warm,” says Letts.

The playwright was in London with August when Anderson called to say this house was about to go on the market. Built on a quiet cul-de-sac in 2003, the cream-colored stucco three-story home has four bedrooms, four-plus bathrooms, two fireplaces, and a three-car garage.

The house turned out to be a good fit. “It has a lot of space,” says Letts, who initially had some reservations about moving into Bucktown. “I didn’t think I could handle all the hipsters,” he says. “But the hipsters all have babies now. That makes it more palatable.”
