The Heavy Feather, Logan Square’s recently opened fern bar upstairs from sister spot Slippery Slope, swaps the lower level’s dance party for amber lighting and Fleetwood Mac tunes. Though few of its patrons were of age (let alone born) in the ’70s, the retro den is a reminder that it was a fine decade for drinking.

Case in point: the plum gin fizz ($10), a modern take on the now-classic cocktail that was totally in vogue back then. Beverage director Doug Phillips combines two types of gin, herbaceous bitters, and lemon juice and tops it with frothed egg white, creating a mildly sweet drink with mass appeal.

Phillips says the key to its deliciousness is Averell Damson gin, which is crafted with tart and spicy plums. “It is a contemporary spirit made in a nostalgic way reminiscent of sloe gins [liqueurs made with berries from the plum family] of the past,” says Phillips.

Fleetwood Mac says, “Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone.” But hey, its drinks are apparently back. 2357 N. Milwaukee Ave.
