Miguel Zenón and Spektral Quartet
MacArthur “genius” Zenón, a composer and saxophonist known for fusing jazz and Afro-influenced music from his native Puerto Rico, adds an extra level of experimentation with a jibaro-tinged commission for Chicago’s Spektral Quartet.

Joshua Abrams, Ari Brown, Gerald Cleaver, Jeff Parker Quartet
Decorated Detroit drummer Cleaver swoops in for a set with Chicago’s free-jazz brat pack: bassist Abrams of Natural Information Society, tenor sax vet Brown, and, in from California, Tortoise guitarist Parker.

Matana Roberts
Once one of the youngest musicians affiliated with Chicago’s experimental jazz collective Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, this former local spins a blend of ’60s free jazz with heady, modern electronics (see her 12-album series Coin Coin, an exploration of African American history through free jazz). She’ll perform two solo sets on alto sax.

Dee Alexander Quartet with Dwight Trible
Alexander, Chicago’s daring and unpredictable jazz vocalist, performs a series of duets with West Coast crooner Trible, who spent most of his career singing with free-jazz pioneer Pharoah Sanders. In other words, this set could be titled Powerhouse Squared.
