More than 900 antiques dealers populate the swath along Route 40, which traverses Richmond, Indiana and continues into western Ohio. Thankfully, the Old National Road State Welcome Center has broken things down into a pair of easily navigable antiques trails. The first follows the Historic National Road as it winds through Indiana from Richmond to Knightstown before circling back to Route 38 through New Castle, Hagerstown, and Green’s Fork. The epicenter of this trail is in Centerville, where you’ll find Webb’s Antique Mall (200 Union St.; 765-855-5551, webbsantiquemalls.com), an 85,000-square-foot former casket factory now housing 400 dealers. The second trail takes you into Ohio by way of Portland, Indiana, via a rural swath of Route 27. The New Paris Antique Mall (102 E. Main St., New Paris, Ohio; 937-437-0048, newparisantiquemall.com) is another sizeable emporium with 30 vendors in a 10,000-square-foot former Odd Fellows Hall.

While you’re in the area: The Museum of Overbeck Art Pottery (600 W. Main St.; Cambridge City, Indiana; 765-939-0857) showcases the pottery of the six Overbeck sisters, who made critically acclaimed vases, figurines, and painted porcelain pieces through 1955.
Where to stay: Located in Richmond’s historic district, the Philip W. Smith B&B (2039 E. The Westside Guest House (115 NW Seventh St., Richmond; 765-993-0624, westsideguesthouse.com) has one-room lodgings to three-bedroom suites available and is run by a pair of college professor/innkeepers who live across the street; rates range from $110 to $228 a night.
Where to eat: Galo’s Italian Grill (107 Garwood Rd., Richmond; 765-973-9000, galositalian.com) serves Italian comfort food, including pastas, pizzas, chicken, fish, and steaks. The Gennett Mansion (1829 E. Main St., Richmond; 765-935-0055, gennettmansion.com) offers a locally sourced, five-course prix fixe dinner ($38) that changes monthly.
