Chicago’s most-buzzed-about restaurants this month
Today, an old friend requested recommendations for a North Side BYO dinner spot—making restaurant suggestions to pals is one of the unofficial duties of a dining editor. After writing him a lengthy reply, I figured I’d pass along the list to you, our readers.
TAC QUICK THAI KITCHEN
(Thai) This place is the best. Also, a storefont fave of Grant Achatz’s. 3930 N. Sheridan; 773-227-5253
SHOKRAN MOROCCAN
(Moroccan) Definitely on the kitschy side, but great kebabs, couscous, and baklava—among other items. 4027 W. Irving Park Rd.; 773-427-9130
COAST
(Sushi) Young crowd, lively joint in Bucktown (not really North Side). 2045 N. Damen; 773-235-5775
CHILAM BALAM
(Modern Mexican) Small plates. Ideal for people who are not into traditional Mexican cuisine. Very fun place. Cash only. No reservations on weekends, but they send you next door for a drink and call you on your cell phone when your table is ready. 3023 N. Broadway; 773-296-6901
DUE LIRE
(Italian) Charming little trattoria, although it’s a bit cramped. Too bad—they just got their liquor license but still allow one bottle per couple for a $12 corkage fee. 4520 N. Lincoln; 773-275-7878
BONSOIRÉE
(Contemporary) This matchbox is more Logan Square. Set meals with the five-course one being the cheapest at $55. Very small and unique restaurant; it doubles as a gourmet carryout. 2728 W. Armitage; 773-486-7511
MIXTECO GRILL
(Mexican) Very popular. Original owner was a Frontera/Topolobampo vet. 1601 W. Montrose; 773-868-1601
TERRAGUSTO
(Italian) Sort of a poster child for somewhere between red sauce and haute. 1851 W. Wilson; 773-248-2777; also at 340 W. Armitage; 773-281-7200
If you’re going on a Thursday night…
BROWNTROUT
(Contemporary American) They have a $20 corkage fee except on Thursday nights, when they waive corkage entirely. 4111 N. Lincoln, 773-472-4111
