Wednesday, August 19
Pizza tastes better when it’s free, which it will be at Bar Toma (110 E. Pearson St., Gold Coast, 312-266-3110) in the lead-up to the spot’s reopening on Friday. All you have to do to get a gratis slice is show up between 4 and 5:30 p.m. today or tomorrow or from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday and show staffers on the patio that you’re a follower of the restaurant on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
Taste tacos, tequila, and beer all in the same dinner at Smylie Brothers Brewin Company (1615 Oak Ave., Evanston, 225-999-7320), where $25 will get you access to a taco bar, pours of beers such as a mango-and-habanero-infused kolsch, and tequila cocktails. The meal starts at 7 p.m. and you can call to make a reservation.
We didn’t mean for this to happen, but a lot of the best events are happening on Wednesday this week (sorry!). Like, for instance, the Tale of Two Houses Dinner being put on by Bohemian House and host spot Boarding House (720 N. Wells St., River North, 312-280-0720) in conjunction with California’s Failla Wines. The all-inclusive, $95 whole-hog dinner will feature a team effort from chefs Tanya Baker and Jimmy Papadopoulos. Go nuts with cheap doughnuts at Stan’s Donuts & Coffee (1560 N. Damen Ave, Wicker Park, 773-360-7386; 259 E. Erie St., Streeterville, 312-255-1130), with basic glazed raised cakes selling for $0.86 in honor of founder Stan Berman’s 86th birthday. The first 100 visitors to each location will also nab a free b-day t-shirt.
Once you’re done with doughnuts, celebrate another birthday at Division Ale House (1942 W. Division St., Wicker Park, 773-384-6886). It’s the spot’s sixth anniversary, and to mark the occasion, they’ll have a patio party from noon to 5 p.m. Their $30 food and drink package includes all-you-can-eat smoked meats and other eats, two beers from Three Floyds, and a shot of Tullamore Dew whiskey for $30. Tickets are available here.
