The Mad Men vibes are strong at Vol. 39 (39 S. LaSalle St., Loop), the new dark-lacquered lounge inside the Kimpton Gray hotel that's stocked with plenty of midcentury touches and six different variants of Old Fashioneds. Heavy bound volumes lining its walls almost put it in the running for "world's chicest law library." Combine the two and you've got a Loop power boozer's favorite new haunt.

Particularly if you come between 4 and 6 p.m., the first of its two rush periods (the other's from 8 to 10 p.m.), you'll see a lot of important-looking people in suits dotting the couches and stools. Later in the evening, it gets a bit more relaxed, as hotel guests start to trickle in to sip on an Astoria martini (with dolin blanc, gin, and orange bitters).
