The burger California went crazy for (no, sorry, not In-N-Out, the other one) is making its first foray into the Chicago market later this year, when the cult-favorite chain Umami Burger sets up shop (and griddle) at 1480 N. Milwaukee Ave.
They'll offer a streamlined menu of popular burgers from their other locations (like their eponymous burger topped with shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, a parmesan crisp, and umami ketchup) as well as an exclusive Wicker Park burger. You can also expect beer, wine, and cocktails.
This is intended to be the first of many outposts in the area, joining more than twenty locations sprinkled across the West Coast, New York, and Florida.
The joint is named after the fifth taste sensation, which roughly translates from Japanese to mean "savory" and really refers to the glutamates that make foods like meats and hard cheeses so very tasty. At Umami, just think of it as shorthand for a flavor-bomb of a burger.
