Opening
Miss Ricky’s (Virgin Hotel, 203 N. Wabash Ave., Loop, 312-940-4400) is just like your favorite old-school, all-day diner, if that diner served kale salads, Ina’s Heavenly Hots, and $7 doughnuts.
Morsels
Things have been a little out of control since Shin Thompson’s ramen spot Furious Spoon (1571 N. Milwaukee Ave., Wicker Park, 773-687-8445) opened. They’ve now had to close early on multiple occasions due to high demand for their bowls—apparently the place only has capacity to make the broth for 450 orders a day. Maybe now that the weather is (fingers crossed) turning toward spring, the lines will die down, but if they don’t, here’s a tip Chicago has tested and approved: If you go at 5 p.m. on a Tuesday, you’ll definitely get a seat.
Let the James Beard Foundation Awards hype commence. The host for this year’s ceremonies, which will take place in Chicago (and not New York, for the first time ever) on May 4, will be Food Network star Alton Brown, and there will be appearances aplenty from all your favorite celebrities—that is, if your idea of a celebrity is a world-renowned chef.
In case you’re in need of fuel before/during/after the dyeing of the river this weekend, you can stumble over to Shake Shack (66 E. Ohio St., River North, 312-667-1701) for a holiday special: When Irish Fries Are Smiling (crinkle cuts topped with horseradish cream, scallions, and bacon). That’s available starting Friday and running through St. Patrick’s Day. If dessert’s more your jam, you can stop in between March 16 and March 22 for a chocolate-mint frozen custard.
