The Chicago-based Union of Concerned Scientists is out with a new guide to explain how to reduce your carbon footprint in your own back- and front-yard. Most of the tips you’ve heard before: ditch the gas-powered lawnmower, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers; plant trees and shrubs to remove CO2 and to shade your home, compost, limit lawns, and the like. But if you’re new to gardening, the green movement, or need a refresher, this nice concise guide will steer you straight. And for chemical-free fertilizer and electric mower recommendations, see Lou Manfredini’s latest column in Chicago Home + Garden’s May/June issue.

Last weekend, prior to dinner with friends at The Wit's Cibo Matto, The Creative Director and I rode the elevator up to the 27th-floor bar Roof for one round of cocktails (a Manhattan and a vodka soda, to be exact). "That'll be $23," said the bartender, right before I picked my jaw up off the floor. Talk about sticker shock—that's half the amount it takes to... Read more
Last Wednesday, I attended a screening of a documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, which opens in Chicago tomorrow, April 30th, at the Landmark Century Cinema. The film chronicles the unlikely friendships forged between a kooky amateur filmmaker named Thierry Guetta and certain high-profile members of the graffiti underground—most notably Banksy, a notoriously elusive British graffiti artist... The Property: When she was appointed by President Obama to an ambassadorial post in Rome last year, Ertharin Cousin was reluctant to let go of her Chicago home, a three-bedroom condo she had painstakingly updated in the Powhatan, the Art Deco treasure at 49th Street and South Lake Shore Drive. Hot off the presses is a gorgeous coffee table book of photos of mostly Chicago-area midcentury modernist homes taken by the famed architectural photographer Julius Shulman, who died at 98 in 2009. Gary Gand, a founder of Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond (who himself lives in a Keck and Keck ranch house in Riverwoods), approached Shulman in 2006 about doing the book. Julius Shulman: Chicago Midcentury Modernism (Rizzoli; $60) features the Minsk House, designed by Keck & Keck in 1955; the 1960 Burton Frank House; architect Harry Weese’s inspired modernist home and studio of 1957; and other modern masterpieces.

The most popular dishes from La Cucina will... Read more
"Exactly what is Club Nutz?" That was the question, but all I heard on the other end of the phone was the sound of hammers thumping and drills buzzing. Two days from the opening of Artropolis, Ken Tyburski, the curatorial director of NEXT, the emerging artists portion of the fair, was simultaneously trying to supervise the installation of booths and conduct an interview... April 13, 2010--For the fourth consecutive year, Chicago magazine honored five local eco-innovators in its annual Green Awards editorial feature. To salute these individuals, Chicago magazine partnered with Shedd Aquarium to hold a reception in Shedd’s newly renovated Oceanarium. Guests enjoyed a brief awards presentation, which included a documentary by Suree Towfighnia, followed by a private viewing of the aquarium’s beluga whale calf. Read more
