Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Josh Chicoine, co-director of the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival. The fifth annual CIMMfest kicks off this Thursday.

“On Thursday, CIMMfest opens with Van Dyke Parks, renowned songwriter and collaborator with Brian Wilson at the new Constellation (formerly Viaduct Theater). There's a pre-party at Underbar with food and drink and then I’ll get over to the show. Past that, I'll be heading to the Township for the after show with Mz Diggy Dulce and Legend Haz It.

Friday is hectic, but we'll be going to the Filmmakers Cocktail Hour at CIMMcity (2634 N. Milwaukee Ave.) at 5 and then I'll be flying around to several amazing events: The Elvis Impersonator contest at the Logan Theatre before the Argentine film, The Last Elvis at 8 p.m., then to the Congress for The Funky Meters, Greyboy Allstars, and JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, then to the Private Sessions Showcase at the Double Door, then Pontiak, Rabid Rabbit, and Woodsman at the Burlington, and the Bloodshot Records Showcase at the Hideout with Lydia Loveless and Luke Winslow-King. Whew. Everyone will end up at Moe’s Tavern on Milwaukee, then sleep.

Saturday is another full day with daytime screenings at the Logan and Music Box, panels, and day parties at Cole’s Bar and Township as well. The marquee event of the weekend is Saturday at the Constellation with Melvin Van Peebles, hosted by Richard Steele of WBEZ. CIMMfest is awarding Mr. Van Peebles with our first lifetime achievement award, and then he and his band WidLaxative will treat us to a raunchy set of funk. I'll attempt to get over to Rosa's to see MacArthur Genius, Corey Harris and Guy Davis and then to too many afterparties.

Sunday will be a quieter day with Filmmaker Brunch at CIMMcity and then various panels, films, etc. I'll be heading down to Bronzeville with Mr. Van Peebles for a private dinner with Theaster Gates at the Black Cinema House and then to our closing night film, awards show, keynote from Martin Atkins, and final film: The Source Family.” —As told to Abigail Tracy
