SUNDAY SCHOOL: St. Vincent plays Epiphany Sunday night.

THE FIVE

Don’t-miss events for Wed 06.03.09 through Tue 06.09.09

1

concerts St. Vincent*
If you missed St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark, a couple of months back at the Hideout, don’t make the same mistake twice. In Clark’s beguiling art pop, Tin Pan Alley melodies weave among dance beats; ethereal lyrics tell of black holes and rainbows; and flowery keyboards coexist with industrial-rock distortion. A wonder.
GO: Show moved from Epiphany; new location: June 7 at 7:30. $13-$15. Metro, 3730 N Clark. metrochicago.com

2

concerts Levon Helm*
His voice is as salty-sweet as slow-smoked barbecue, and his many hits with The Band helped establish that group’s position at the heart of pop culture. These days Helm mostly plays in his barn/studio in Woodstock, NY, so consider this concert a rare treat.
GO: June 9 at 7:30. $38-$72.50. Chicago Theatre, 175 N State. ticketmaster.com

3

classical MusicNow
The CSO’s daring duo returns: Composers-in-residence Mark-Anthony Turnage and Osvaldo Golijov host the U.S. debut of Turnage’s Out of Black Dust, plus Golijov’s Mariel for cello and—wait for it—marimba, and a premiere by the laptop maverick Jeremy Flower, best known for his collaboration with Golijov on Ainadamar, the gripping, Grammy-winning tribute to Federico García Lorca.
GO: June 8 at 8. $10-$20. Harris Theater, 205 E Randolph. harristheaterchicago.org

4

classical ICE plays Xenakis
More new music, more power pairings: Check out the MCA’s Bucky Fuller exhibition, then stick around for this concert of avant-garde percussion and chamber works by another big thinker, the late architect and computer-music pioneer Iannis Xenakis, performed by the local International Contemporary Ensemble.
GO: June 4 at 7:30. $25. Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E Chicago. mcachicago.org

5

farrago Chicago Botanic Garden Wine Festival
The epicurean answer to summer’s street fests? A chance to sip some 250 varieties on the garden’s lush grounds. We’ll drink to that.
