WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND
Up next in our series of weekend plans from notable, in-the-know locals—a.k.a. people we like: Charlie Coffeen, pianist for Sidewalk Chalk and the Ephelon Trio. The Ephelon Trio opens for Questlove at the Shrine on Friday, October 18.
“Friday, [my band] Sidewalk Chalk is doing a masterclass at Columbia College as part of CUP, a contemporary urban popular music program. I also teach a hip hop ensemble class at Columbia. They have a performance at 1 p.m.; it’s free.
“Friday evening, the Ephelon Trio is playing J. Dilla’s Donuts, with a 12-piece group including a string quartet, a horn section, and vocals. We’ve done this show two times. It’s part of a series called “Ephelon Plays.” We choose classic albums that have influenced or informed us, from The Roots’ Come Alive, Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly, the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack, etc. I’m a big fan of Scofflaw in Logan Square, so we might swing over there afterwards for a drink. It’s always a great spot. They do the Old-Fashioned really well.
“On Saturday, Deltron 3030 is performing at the House of Blues and I’ve never seen them live. I have a couple friends who are performing with them; they’re doing a big string production.
“A favorite brunch spot of mine is Rootstock, in Humboldt Park. So I might head there for brunch on Sunday morning; they have really awesome locally-grown food.” —As told to Tomi Obaro
