Elmhurst doesn't always come to mind when one thinks of multimillion-dollar mansions, but today Julie Woolfe of Woolfe & Co. Realtors is listing this property at 340 South Cottage Hill Avenue for an eye-popping $3.5 million, making it the most expensive home ever listed in the DuPage County suburb.
The 7,107-square-foot mansion, built in 1929, has been completely renovated in recent years by its current owner, Woolfe says. It includes four bedroom suites, two first-floor powder rooms, seven fireplaces, and marble flooring in its foyer and first-floor bar area. The house has five full bathrooms along with the two half baths. The kitchen features granite countertops, while the master bath has marble counters.
Other notable features include an in-ground swimming pool with hot tub, first-floor sunroom, a second-floor office area, a finished basement great room with built-in wine storage, a four-car garage, and a covered patio with fireplace.
“It’s very grand and it’s very elegant,” Woolfe says of the home that sits on a 0.8-acre lot in an area where lots are generally only 50 by 150 feet. Woolfe says that even with a 2003 rehab and addition that added 2,500 square feet to the original home, the current owner “was able to retain a lot of the original charm of the house.""
Potential buyers will likely be people who might otherwise be looking for mansions farther out in Hinsdale or along the North Shore, Woolfe says. While she acknowledges that the highest recent sale in Elmhurst was for $2.4 million, she notes that the area has seen teardowns that ended up costing $4 million to buy, demolish, and build anew.
“We’re trying to capture that buyer before they put that high-dollar amount into a high-end build,” she says.
The median home sale price in Elmhurst is $380,000, according to Realtor.com, and this home last sold for $1.5 million, in 2001.
