The Property: When it sold October 11, this home on the bluff above Lake Michigan in Glencoe was the second on its block to go for over $4 million in the past few months. In early August, the house next door went for $4.7 million.

The house next door, which sold in August

Each home sits on slightly more than an acre and has access down the bluff to private Lake Michigan beach. They’re a ten-minute walk from the town’s charming downtown area and Metra station. The $4.5-million one, pictured above, is a two-story with six bedrooms and four-plus baths. Its $4.7-million neighbor, pictured at right, is a three-story with five bedrooms and six-plus baths.

No interior photos accompanied either home’s for-sale listing. The listing for the one that sold at $4.7 million said the home had a “lovely reception hall with curved staircase,” “a handsome paneled library and newer fully appointed kitchen,” and a “sun-filled family room and sunroom [that] overlook the lake, yard and gardens.” The listing for the $4.5 million home referred to its “custom millwork, hardwood floors” and “lovely living room with fireplace.”

Both homes were sold by the same owners, the estate of Florence Boone, who died in April at age 93. She had a long history of civic involvement, serving as president of the Glencoe village board and on the school boards for the town’s lower school district as well as the New Trier high school district. I could not determine which of the houses Boone lived in or when she bought them, although county records indicate that she and her late second husband, William, had owned the more-expensive home since at least the late 1980s.

The homes went on the market June 5. The higher-priced sale closed August 1, followed by the second sale on October 11. Neither of the real estate agents who listed the properties for the estate would discuss the homes. The $4.5 million buyers are not yet identified in public records, and the $4.7 million buyers went through a trust that obscures their names in the records.

Price Points: Two other Glencoe homes on Lake Michigan have sold for more than $4.5 million this year. The highest-priced was a $7.5-million January sale. In March, another sold for $4.58 million; that house now faces demolition.
